A Misty Cocoon

Prompt from DailyPrompt.com
When Abigail first moved to the island she hated the fog. How it smothered everything in dark damp grey. The way it stole mornings and sometimes entire days.
But now, after living here three years, she’d adopted the local mindset; fog days were like snow days back home. Only necessary outdoor work was done. As much as possible everyone settled in to work indoors, ideally from home.
Her laptop on the side showed the lively neighbourhood chat. Children were video calling their friends. And likely adults were too.
But Abby found herself adopting a meditative approach today. Taking her cup of tea and some mending to the window seat. Watching the light and her shadow playing across the fog. How it wavered and danced in the breeze. The way she could see the lights of her neighbours but they were pearly glows which seemed distant and unobtrusive.
The fog wasn’t a horrid choking presence. She found it strange to think that she’d ever seen it that way. No, it was a cocoon. The sea had decided that everyone needed to stop dashing about and take a day to rest. So it wrapped them all up in cocoons and hush.
Abby smiled into her mug. Tomorrow she’d be back at the construction site organising everything and it’d be all bustle and rush and so much noise. The new school was close to being finished - at least from her perspective. Then it’d be on to refurbishing the Town Hall. So much work to do.
But right now, wrapped up in her own personal island in a quiet gentle sea, that toil felt distant and unimportant. Easy to ignore. Right now, all that mattered, all that existed, was what she had in front of her.
Right now, the only thing she wanted was a fresh cuppa. And perhaps some buttered toast. She blew a kiss to the fog and pottered into the kitchen.
Just like those distant childhood memories the weather would shift and tomorrow the sun would melt it all away. This was a precious, stolen holiday. She intended to luxuriate in it.
Prompt was “Write a piece about fog, steering away from any horror themes”.
