Rebecca and Genny were previously seen here and here.
Two years ago, Rebecca would’ve been a nervous wreck right now. But that was before adopting a changeling. And if parenting a changeling taught you anything it was how to roll with the unexpected and maintain perspective.
“You alright, luv?” Graham shot her an uncertain, concerned look.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Rebecca said, and marvelled that it was true.
Funny how, every time, her mind painted the plans in rose-tinted pastel. Assumed that she could manifest miracle tableaus worthy of parenting magazines. And then her good intentions ran headfirst into reality. Every time.
But the children were having fun. And really, what better measure for a party was there than all the invitees enjoying themselves?
Yes, the cake had collapsed in the oven and her desperate attempts to hide this with icing had only compounded the problem. Yes, half the decorations had fallen down before the first guest arrived and were now held to the wall with visible masking tape. (She was going to leave a scathing review for that double-sided ‘decorating tape’!) Yes, rain meant they all had to stay inside and couldn’t do the scavenger hunt.
And yet.
The other children were roaring with laughter at Genny’s improvised puppet show. They’d delighted in decorating the poor cake with (thoroughly washed) plastic toys and declared it a “chocolate mountain”. Rebecca thought she could salvage the scavenger hunt, and if she couldn’t, well… this was still going to be remembered as a jolly party.
Surrounded by mess and foiled ideals, she laughed along with the others and meant it from the bottom of her heart.
Nothing was going according to plan, and it was absolutely perfect.
Prompt was “She laughed at the mess she made. Nothing was going according to plan but it was absolutely perfect.”
