Love Takes Many Forms
“You’d really want to date someone who never wears the same face twice?”

“Um, K-Kit?” Sapphire hoped her pounding heart wasn’t actually audible. She was resigned to the warmth in her cheeks being visible, even with extra foundation dabbed on. “I, uhh, I w-was wondering if, um, if you have a, if anyone’s already asked you to the disco??”
Kit froze, their usually expressive hair going limp. “Huh?”
Sapphire sucked in air and managed a gabbled but coherent “WouldYouLikeToGoToTheDiscoWithMe?”
Blank stare. Kit seemed genuinely baffled.
“Because… I’d… like to go to the disco with you.” Sapphire whispered. Painfully glad nobody was around to witness her humiliation. “If, if you’d like that.”
“I - but-” Kit stammered, somehow managing to look more awkward than Sapphire felt, “sometimes I’m a guy!”
Funny how a metaphorical slap to the face like someone not remembering you could banish embarrassment. Sapphire’s nerves were instantly replaced with righteous indignation.
“Uh, I’m in your class?” She propped her fists on her hips and tried not to scowl too hard. “We eat lunch together like two-three times a week?? We were lab partners for-”
“Ok so how have you not noticed??”
Wait, what? Sapphire’s brows furrowed.
“…Did you seriously think I was asking you out and hadn’t noticed you’re a shapechanger??”
“W-well, if you had noticed then…”
Kit’s flustered confusion appeared sincere. A tragic fact which melted Sapphire’s ire.
She managed a gentle smile and assured them “Yeah, I know that sometimes you’re a guy, and sometimes you’re a girl, and sometimes you’re… stuff I don’t have words for. But through it all you’re you, who’s a super cool person that’s tons of fun to hang out with. Plus most of the time you’re really freaking cute. So I thought I’d ask if, um…”
Nerves sprouted again, but she gulped them down. “If you wanna go out? We, you could tell people we’re going as friends, if you’re more comfortable with that. I mean, we can go as friends, if… B-because being friends is good!!”
Kit’s features were shifting. No, melting might be a better word. Like they were having trouble maintaining a concrete form. Had she offended them?
Then they said “You’d really want to date someone who never wears the same face twice?”
“Uh, well…” Sapphire paused and thought this over. Wanting to give an honest response. “Not being able to find you in a crowd can be a pain, and I’m going to have to label you in every photo we take together, but other than that I don’t think it’ll really matter?”
“B-but what about the fact I’m sometimes…” Kit’s body warped and stretched in a disturbing fashion, but before Sapphire had to look away they settled into a heavily tanned buff guy.
“Er, that’s totally fine.” Sapphire managed. Voice small, eyes big. I wonder if they could pick me up like that? They totally look like they could but…
“…Seriously? But, then, what about…”
More shifting, flesh moving around like it had a mind of its own, and now Kit was a willowy androgynous figure with raven-black hair and piercing purple eyes.
“Yep. Also fine.” OhMyGosh so pretty!!
“Um. What about…”
Ok, a body reshuffling itself was freaky, but Sapphire told herself she was getting used to it. And it was interesting, in a not-quite-morbid way.
Kit propped their hands on their hips and stared defiantly. As if expecting a pudgy girl to somehow be a step too far.
Whoah, those curves! Is there a, like, first-date way of saying “OMG that makes me want you to full-body squish me so hard”? No, no no, that is definitely a thought you let escape on, like, the fourth-date at the EARLIEST.
So instead Sapphire managed a smile and a double thumbs-up. Which earned her another blank, disbelieving stare.
She ventured “If I didn’t think I could, I dunno, love all of your faces, I shouldn’t be asking you out.”
Kit raised an eyebrow. “So, what, you’ll find me beautiful however I look?”
“I mean…” Sapphire frowned, feeling for the right words. However flippant Kit had sounded, she was certain it had been a serious, testing question. “There are forms you’ve taken which I didn’t find attractive. But I don’t think anyone’s attracted to their partner all the time. And most of the time I find you cute and, um…. PleaseDon’tBeOffended… hot.”
“R-really?”
Apparently being a shapechanger didn’t make you immune to blushing. Should that make her feel less awkward? Maybe not, but it did.
Sapphire grinned, trying to look both reassuring and hopeful. “Sooo… disco date?”
“Uhhh… yeah! Sure! Disco date!!” Kit returned the smile, their voice high and trembling. “D-do, er, is there… did you have, um, a couple’s look planned?”
“Er, no, but I can send you pics of my wardrobe if you wanna coordinate.”
“Mmkay.” Kit hesitated, then pressed “Is there a way you don’t want me to look?”
“Ohh. Hm.” Sapphire mulled this over, then meekly said “When you were lime green it made me feel queasy when I looked at you, so… not green, please? Or, um, looking older than we actually are? I’d feel really weird having photos with someone who looks like they’re…”
“Ewww yeah no way!” Kit’s cringing was better than a promise.
Sapphire relaxed and laughed. “Mostly just, like, whatever your version of being dressed for dancing is.”
“O-okay.”
Actually… that was a thought. Each of those forms had been wearing different clothes. Did Kit have super cool school uniforms which could change shape with them, or…?
“Uhhhh not to make this weird but have you been, like, naked the entire time we’ve known each other??”
“I SWEAR I’M NOT AN EXHIBITIONIST THIS IS JUST SO MUCH EASIER!!”
Kit slapped a hand across their mouth and winced, now bright red. That clearly hadn’t been meant to come out at top volume. Sapphire grabbed their hand and dragged them towards home, or more to the point away from right here!
Maybe not the best start to a relationship, but hey, at least they’d managed a roughly equal split of awkward…
Prompt was “Spectrum”.
