Prompt from DailyPrompt.com
âGood afternoon, Mr Gramble. How are you today?â
The elderly goblin let out a weary huff, the tips of his ears curling and uncurling. âWell. Given the state of the world right now⌠canât complain, I suppose.â
Dr Kylie smiled sympathetically. âI get you. Are your joints any better?â
âNo. Tried mugwort - my cousin swears by it. Didnât do a jot.â
âOh dear.â Kylie took his outstretched hand for inspection The joints were visibly swollen, and his talons cracked and flaky. âHm. Have you had your humors checked recently?â
âThey keep swearing my levels are normal, but I think Iâve got too much phlegm. Runs in the family - my mum and granddad had the same problem.â
âAlright. Letâs go with the symptoms and Iâll prescribe you some arsenic patches to try.â
âThanks, doc.â Gramble gave a grateful grin, his ears relaxing. âThe big man wonât give you trouble for it, yeah?â
Kylie gave a razor-thin smile. âHeâs learned not to get between a changeling and her patientsâ welfare.â
Gramble chuckled approvingly, then reflectively added âOther than that, everythingâs been pretty normal.â
âThen the tests shouldnât take long at all.â Kylie said breezily, and set to work.
Half an hour later she cheerfully announced âYes, you seem in overall excellent health. Ten out of ten on your tongue reach, thatâs a good sign. Excellent barometer for soft tissue health, you know.â
âUh-huh.â Gramble wrinkled his nose and smirked to himself, thankfully too polite to make any lewd comments. Unlike Mrs Gramble, who wouldâve been all over that statement. Well, if whatever âworkoutâ routine he was following workedâŚ
Turning back to the results, Kylie mused âThere are concerning points on the Other hearing tests, however. Looks like you might be starting to lose the lower magical range. Iâll refer you to a specialist at the hospital.â
âAh. And here was me thinking the troll kiddies were getting quieter.â
Kylie quirked an eyebrow, a wry smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. âThat really shouldâve been a tip-off.â
âWell, easy to say in hindsight.â Gramble flapped a hand. âHope them hearing gems have got smaller since my dad needed âem, they gave him neck-ache.â
âOh yes, designs have moved on a lot in the past three decades. Much lighter and more comfortable, especially if you choose an âall-dayâ make. You can get fashionable casings now, too.â
âMeh. Iâm a plain silver fella.â Gramble twiddled his marital nose ring, which was elegantly understated. Very traditionalist.
âThen youâll have plenty of options.â Kylie tapped her pen on the page. âLetâs see⌠Keep up the low-iron diet, your liverâs much better. While the rock-climbingâs good, Iâd look into additional exercise which doesnât strain your hands. Weâll follow up on the discussed issues in two months.â
âThanks, doc.â Gramble hopped off the stool. âWeâre glad to have you. So often itâs tests tests tests and never any help!â
Kylie smiled. âOh, well - ask a changeling to choose between oaths and guidelines, and thatâs what you get.â
Prompt was âWrite a short story about a fantasy creature going to the doctor for their yearly check-up. What would they measure? What constitutes as 'normalâ?â
